Here's Ariel to talk about gags, safety and consent on Restrained Elegance shoots. There's a distinction between the characters in the film- the kidnapped Medieval maiden or the viking princess- and the performer who is portraying that character. The characters might not be consenting within the storyline (as in any other fictional drama) but of course everything we do is filmed with the full informed consent of the performers on set. We always have safety scissors in every box of rope, and the rigger and photographer both carry safety scissor or a rescue hook too. We shoot with a separate rigger. This person does the tying, and their primary responsibility on set while we are shooting is to look out for safety in case there's anything the photographer or model hasn't noticed. We always go through our safety procedures with every model on every shoot. We have a rule that anyone can call cut at any time. So if the model starts to go numb or has a knot poking into her or any other issue, we cut and untie them.We use "cut" as a safeword for two reasons: firstly because it is a film industry standard which most people know, and second because "cut" happens to be a word one can usually say clearly even if gagged. But to reinforce that we have two more safety signals just in case the performer doesn't think they can convey "cut" clearly enough. The second is to make a repeated short "mmm" noise. This is distinctive and distinctively different from usual struggling "mmmmmph" noises. The third is repeated blinking, again something you'd never normally do on set. And again we go through all of this with every model during the briefing and risk assessment. So you can be assured that at Restrained Elegance, no matter how dramatic the storyline, it was always shot with happy, safe, consenting performers. Hywel & Ariel |
